Alpen Film Festival in Weiden: Great Mountain Stories on the Big Screen

On Monday, October 12, 2026, the Alpen Film Festival will take place at the Neue Welt Kinocenter in Weiden. The audience can expect an approximately 105-minute program featuring five selected mountain films, live moderated and characterized by impressive visuals, personal stories, and the special fascination of alpinism.

Five Films between Euphoria and Quiet Moments

At the center is Nanga Parbat – Echoes of Sisyphus. The film follows extreme mountaineer David Göttler over many years on his journey to Nanga Parbat. It’s not just about reaching the summit: it's about endurance, setbacks, self-reflection, and the question of what drives people when success is not guaranteed.

An Ordinary Life tells the story of a mountain-loving couple who has been climbing, traveling, and experiencing adventures together for around six decades. The film blends humor and emotional closeness with a reflection on freedom, love, responsibility, and a fulfilled life.

Alpinism as Responsibility

With Steep Careers, the focus is on mountain forests and their importance as protection forests. The film shows how much knowledge, patience, and intergenerational responsibility is needed to sustainably preserve sensitive mountain regions.

In 50-50, Ines Papert and Sarah Hueniken take center stage. Their story revolves around trust, experience, and mutual support within the climbing team. Fathom confronts the audience with the risks of freeriding and poses the question of whether mountain films should also depict mistakes, doubts, and difficult consequences alongside heroic stories.

Live Moderated Movie Night for Mountain and Film Fans

The festival combines great big screen images with expert moderation and insights into film production. The event targets mountaineers, nature lovers, documentary film fans, and anyone who appreciates extraordinary life stories. The careful program selection follows a clear event planning: the focus is not just on athletic achievements, but also on togetherness, responsibility, and the culture of alpinism.

The event atmosphere in the cinema is brought to life by magnificent landscape shots, quiet moments, and the shared audience spirit. The experience leads from the highest peaks of the Himalayas through alpine protection forests into the world of climbing and freeriding.
